Growing older, growing happier - Published Monday June 14th, 2010

A different set of seniors is pending. They will be healthier. Simple things like a reduction in the number of people who smoke in this cohort will increase the likelihood of not only people living longer, but living in better shape.

Major diseases, such as heart disease and some types of cancer, are being managed and thus, changing from an acute to a chronic disease. Life will be extended and, in some cases, a reasonably good standard of life will be possible.

Jo-Ann Fellows is a writer living in Fredericton. Her columns on seniors' concerns and on public policy issues appear twice a month on Mondays.
