Province plans to keep more seniors at home to relieve stress on health system, nursing homes

The Department of Social Development has launched a program called "Be Independent Longer," dedicated to keeping seniors in their own homes, and out of the traditional health sector.
Currently, 600 seniors are waiting in hospital for a nursing home bed throughout New Brunswick, says Social Development spokeswoman Judy Cole.

In Moncton, 147 seniors are waiting for a nursing home bed. And that's after the construction of a brand-new facility in Riverview this year, which took 60 people off the waiting list.
